The white saviour, the damsel in distress, the angel in the house, the exotic, evil foreigner woman redeemed by the white woman, long etc. But it doesn't matter a bit. Upon hearing of the Marquis's marriage, his black sheep heir, Osborne and his wife leave India and return to England to determine how to prevent the title from passing to Walderhusrst and Emily's prospective heir to their own. Yet while a simple and basic level of enjoyment of the plot does not require a lot of thinking, this book is noteworthy at least…
It sounds as if I don't approve of stay at home houswifes, it's not that..
Despite the almost unbelievable good nature of the 34-year-old heroine Emily, one admires her, and cheers for her, and laughs as, without trying, she "lands" the "catch" of the day, a titled lord, a childless widower, who, in his early 50's, wants a wife but doesn't want to have to cater to her. The ever-obliging and cheerful Emily is ideal. Classic book on the trials and triumph of a poor but genteel lady, Reviewed in the United States on January 30, 2014. For a variety of reasons - her lack of expectations for a relationship, her beauty, h. A less complimentary view of marriage in the post-Victorian era, but a good read.
Now granted I was a college English major and later earned a Masters of Divinity. The Making of a Marchioness, Part I and II book. The making of a marchioness è un romanzo diviso in due parti, inizialmente concepite separatamente.
But I found it difficult to love. THE MAKING OF A LADY is a 2012 ITV adaptation of Frances Hodgson Burnett's novel, THE MAKING OF A MARCHIONESS. But I found it difficult to love. Intrigued by the great cast, I gave this movie a shot. The story has a racist element but the heroine even rises above that. Most of my favorite writers fall into the category of romance in the 1800's, early 1900's.
It's so easy and comfortable to slip into it. Like many others, I picked this up because I'd read A Little Princess, The Secret Garden and Little Lord Fauntleroy.
The romantic scenes in this movie are beautiful - tender and intimate, and both of the main characters are very appealing. She died in her Long Island, New York home, in 1924. I loved this book. There's a problem loading this menu right now.
Emily loves her husband and he enjoys her company. A less complimentary view of marriage in the post-Victorian era, but a good read.
I cried several times and was satisfied at that end. I don’t know why I ordered this book. Emily Fox-Seton is an endearing character: innocent but not naive, optimistic in nature but realistic in her expectations, which for a "genteel" woman in her thirties did not include marriage. The sweet character of the heroine and the charm of the narrative keep the reader totally engaged. A very Victorian/Edwardian style of fiction. Another adult Burnett.
As it is, she is so earnest and pure that she never sees her effect on others, never even seems to worry about anything except if she is 'good' enough. June 5th 2001
To read more about The Making of a Marchioness go to the Persephone Forum. She is a cypher, a foil, for the more fully drawn characters of Maria and the Marquis. It won't win any awards but the costuming is gorgeous, the cast is surprisingly good (in spite of any romantic spark between the leads), and it's something I'll watch more than once. The racism is typical for the time period, but no more pleasant because of that, and the main character is just a little too good. I just liked her even when she saw the best in people (and they were trying to kill her). If you're into turn of the century writing, this book's for you. I am surprised I haven't run on to it before. Our heroine, Emily Fox-Sefton, is so very good and cheerful that she's almost simple minded. I found this book after stumbling on a different Persephone in a used book store. Reviewed in the United States on August 10, 2016. The author of famous stories for children also wrote some books for adults, but the style is much the same, somewhat sentimental, very straight-forward and easy to read.
Emily Fox-Seton is a hard-working, penniless thirty-four year old living in London, who's forced to earn a living running errands for rich Victorian ladies. Readers have had the benefit of many other writers with the wit and skill to show, in stories about this period, entire personalities as they fit into the times in which they live. Although primarily known today for her children's books, France's Hodgson Burnett wrote a great many novels for adults, and, in fact, The Making of A Marchioness was written ten years befor A Little Princess. Strictly speaking, this book is not primarily a romance - but it is a beautifully romantic book. Awards Directed by Richard Curson Smith. This was... not worth picking up. That said, I enjoyed the story of two people who may have had social position (HE had a TITLE! In some ways she is a type of Pollyanna character herself, but without being conscious of it or rubbing it in other people's faces. I always find it a bit challenging to write a review of a book that I consider a favorite. The Making Of A Marchioness, by Frances Hodgson Burnett This is the sort of work where, if you have any familiarity with romance novels, you know where this is going. The character of the heroine is to sublimely one dimensional. Surely she would have been a more interesting protagonist is she had even the slightest insight into her situation. The heroine, Emily Fox-Seton is very poor, but manages to get by on 20 pounds a year.
It did start out as a love story, and just when I was settled to watching another period romance (I don't like romance), it suddenly became something different. The romance (or the inexistence of it) was touching but not puke inducing.
I love Frances Hodgson Burnett books.
Unable to add item to Wish List. Emily is so good she lets herself almost die just so she doesn't bother her husband, who, by the way, is a piece of shit. Apparently Burnett knew Henry James but then again, Henry knew everyone. Two-part book abou poor lady and a count [s], C.L. The marriage was dissolved in 1898. What a delightful read! Surely the heroine cannot be as dumb as she is depicted as being; it is significant that all the characters and the narrator assure the reader at least once every chapter that Emily is not stupid, because she sure acts that way. The characters' behavior makes no sense. I would much rather have read a book about the semi-evil Anglo-Indian wife of the heir.
I adore "the Secret Garden" and "the Little Princess", so I was excited to see this book for adults by Frances Hodgson Burnett. Yeap there are some dodgy bits but that's its age showing.
